Combination – It is also possible to create an electrical system that relies on both tape and round wiring for different fixtures. This can be more complicated, but can produce the effects desired while still enabling wiring to be hidden.

If you have taken the time to read my bio you will notice that I’m biased towards the belief that computer operating systems should be inexpensive or even better, free. Several years ago I stumbled upon Unix while working out in the field as a computer support specialist. I became fascinated by this different type of operating system controlling one of the servers at a client’s place of business. Wanting to know more I decided to do some research as to what Unix was all about. It was during this time I was introduced to the world of free operating systems and free software.

I have spent a great deal of time researching all the information I could find on why someone would go to the trouble of creating an operating system that he would give away for free. It is through this research that I discovered a whole community of people dedicated to ensuring the Linux operating system would remain free as well as free software to go with it. These people remain, to this day, dedicated to improving Linux as well as creating software that meets or exceeds the needs of the those choosing to use the above.

Ubuntu is just one such version of Linux that is fast becoming the most user friendly operating systems. Ubuntu comes packaged with software most used by all of us. You will find applications such as Open Office, equivalent to the Windows version of Microsoft Office. Conveyor systems are used all over the world. What Are Device Drivers?

How Windows Driver Work:

The computer’s Operating System does not communicate directly with the external hardware, rather it communicates with the drivers and sends the message across, which in turn clls out the required functions needed from each hardware. The device drives does not operate on inputs from the end users. But from the computer. They work silently in the background and after theer installations there are little chances that the end user will ever have to directly operate or interact with them, untill and unless called upon by the Operating System.
 
Different Types of Commonly Used Device Drivers:
 

• Keyboard Driver: Keyboards are an input device, as they are used for inputting information in the computer. Earlier one needed drivers to install and use keyboards with their computers, however, now the latest keyboards come under th
  
  e category of ‘Plug and Play’ hardware. Now, you just need to plug in the keyboard in the port provided in the CPU and start using it. Keyboards now do not need drivers, as the latest Operating Systems recognize and install them directly.
   

• Screen Driver: These drivers are used for installing and connecting monitor screens with the computer. Monitors are used for seeing the output that is why they are called output devices. Earlier there used to be drivers, generally in the form of a CD that installed all the necessary drivers needed for the computer to identify the monitor. However, now the latest operating systems automatically identify and install them. The latest monitors do not need any special driver.

• Webcam Driver: Web cams are used for online video conferencing and chatting. Web cams needs drivers to be installed and to make them compatible with your PC. Big brands, like Logitech, provide drivers for almost all types of web cams in various ranges. They provide updated software, and come with added applications like motion detectors, zoom, recorder, etc.

• Bluetooth Driver: Bluetooth are wireless devices that allow users to enjoy hands-free functionality. Not only mobile users but also computer users can take advantage of this convenient wireless technology. To make your blue tooth device compatible with your computer you need to install appropriate drivers. Blue tooth devices come with a CD that contains all the necessary drivers. You need to install drivers for each piece of blue tooth you intend to use.
   

• Printer Driver and Scanner Driver: Printers are output devices. Printers and scanners come with a CD with all the necessary drivers in them. If you are using a separate printer and a separate scanner, then you need to install different drivers for each of them.

So you are looking to buy a new computer and you are trying to decide what you need. Here are a few tips from me that may help you decide. First before I list them, do NOT let others try to persuade you to choose one just because they like it, it all depends on the user and what they need not someone else. With that being said let’s do it.

Linux : This OS is growing users and we know why. For one most versions of Linux are free. They are “open source” types of operating systems which mean people work on new software, coding, and features for them and share it publicly with others that use Linux. There are a lot more add-ons and customizable features if you use this Operating System. It may look different if you have never seen it before but it is really easy to get used to and who knows you may like it. If you are a gamer then Linux may not be for you. They do have games that work with it and you can always run software to play Windows games with it if you like. So if it is free you don’t have much to lose. Open-source users, students, curious people give it a try!

Windows : This is probably the most common heard OS. Everything you buy comes with it, you see it everywhere, and everyone is always talking about it. Windows is easy to navigate, family friendly, and usually dummy proof. Now with Windows Vista out that may not be the case. Lot of people are complaining about bugs, not able to get used to the look and feel, etc. I personally like Windows XP and that’s what I will stick with because Vista is just a new shin

Mac : Mac is still a growing community and I think it is mainly the price personally. Macs are solid, fast, secure running machines. The interface is nice looking and is easy to use. If you do graphic design, web design, audio/video editing, etc. Mac is a top choice for this. Lots of businesses who go along these lines purchase Macs. They do have a heftier price tag usually around $2,000. They have a clean look to them and are reliable. Most people like the fact that they “can’t get viruses”. Macs CAN get viruses and they do make Anti-Virus software for them. They are more secure but with the growing hacking community I don’t think anyone can ever stop viruses. Macs now have Windows emulation software which allows you to run Windows programs on your Mac, COOL huh. So if your a designer, media type person, power hungry monster, and you have a lot of money to dish out then Mac is for you.

OK, in this article I’m going to help you finally make sense of what for most people is one of the most confusing and least understood computer terms around: “operating system”, or “OS”.

This is actually a pretty easy idea to get when it’s explained right.

Now an operating system, or OS, is a type of software.

To recap my explanation from my last newsletter article:

“Software” is all of the parts of the computer that you can’t really see or touch. Software would include things like Microsoft Word, your email program, Windows or the Mac OS, plus all of your personal files like letters, photos, music, and more.

One way to think about it is like this: hardware is like your brain, the physical part of your body, while software is like your mind or your thoughts — the non-physical part of yourself.

Software runs on hardware, just like your thoughts “run on” your brain.

Make sense? So let’s get to the OS specifically.

First off, let me give a couple of examples: the two best known operating systems right now are Windows, and Mac OS X (pronounced “Oh Ess Ten” — as in the Roman numeral ten).

Windows XP and Windows Vista are a couple different versions of the Windows operating system. While Mac OS 10.4 (also called “Tiger”) and the brand new Mac OS 10.5 (or “Leopard”) are two different versions of Mac OS X.

So what *is* an OS?

In time, a young child learns to talk and walk by learning from others, and as they get older, they also learn more fundamental skills like reading and writing, hand-eye coordination, and so on.

So in other words, they go from being able to do not a lot except eat, sleep, and fill diapers, to physical and mental maturity where they have all the general skills they need to learn more specific skills like driving a car, playing a sport like football, writing a paper for school, working a job, etc.

In many ways, when you turn a computer on, it’s just like a newborn baby. It has the ability to turn on, and show an image on the screen, but that’s about it.

The only other thing it can do is look at the hard drive, and if there is an operating system installed on it, the computer knows to start running the OS.

That process is called “booting”, which is what happens between when you turn the computer on, and when you can actually start using it.

And the best way to think about it is that it’s just like a child being born and growing up: the operating system contains the “life experiences” and lessons that give a child all the basic skills like walking, talking, reading, writing, and so on, that make everything else possible.

So in a sense, it’s like your computer is born and “grows up” in the space of 30 seconds to a minute or so (or longer for some computers) that it takes to “boot” the operating system.

So in other words, the operating system is like those basic skills we all have and learned as children. More specifically, it’s the software on the computer that creates the desktop, the icons on it, moves the little mouse pointer around on the screen when you move your mouse around, lets you view files and open, lets you type, and so on.

Without it, you couldn’t do anything with the computer but turn it on and see an error message like “non system disk or disk error” on a Windows PC, or a flashing question mark on a Mac.

So even though a lot of people don’t really understand what an OS is, or what it does, you couldn’t use your computer without it.

This new operating system from Microsoft have made world crazy with its performance and utilities. It is very fast as compared to previous versions of the Windows operating systems. If you still feel like boot time of the OS is not upto level that was promised by Microsoft. There are various ways to speed up the OS. This article lists 12 different ways to speed up your PC with Windows 7.

• There may be applications installed in your computer which were installed earlier but now you don’t use them much frequently. These programs might get load at the time of boot reserving RAM and processor cycles. You can make use of ‘Turn Windows features on or off’ or software like Revo installer to find out which programs on your system are unnecessary.
• Type ‘msconfig’ in search box and open startup tab. You will find list of applications and programs that start with your OS boot. You will be able to distinguish between system programs and applications. You can turn off applications which are not required to start at the time of boot.
• There is not much difference between minimum requirements of Vista and Windows 7 but if you are trying to switch from XP to Windows7 then you must add more RAM to speed up the system.
• If you use searching a lot time then the procedure explained here is not applicable to you. Otherwise, you can disable search indexing in order to increase the speed of system. If you type index in search bar, you will get option Options Control Panel Window. You can modify settings there as per requirements.
• Hard disk stores data in not-contiguous fashion. It is stored as wherever space is available on disk. When we start specific applications, OS have to collect all the fragments scattered in various memory locations. De-fragmentation carries out task of bringing these various fragments of particular applications together, so that time required to search fragments and load them is saved.
• To change power settings to produce maximum might not save your electricity will surely speed up your system.
• Disk clean up is one more way to speed up Windows 7. You can find the option for the same in accessories. This will show the list of all the garbage in your computer like temporary internet files, temporary files, etc. Select the files you want to delete and press OK.
• Regularly run Anti-virus application installed to detect possible virus and spyware.
• You can use performance troubleshooter, located in control panel, to find the exact reason for your system slowdown.
• If you type ‘gadget’ in search bar, you will find the list desktop gadgets that are running. You will find that some gadgets are running in background though are not visible on desktop. You can stop running of those gadgets from list displayed in front of you.
