So right to the point. There has been many discussions and flame wars on operating systems, and this is my views on what I really think. I am not in favour of any 1 distro or operating system, but I try to see good in everything.

The main wars are windows vs linux or windows vs freeBSD. So why are people not liking windows? Or linux?. Well, some people say windows cost money? and linux is FREE? Sorry but I am not adding points for that. I am here today to compare the usability of the operating systems, and security.

Microsoft is a very popular operating system, and therefore, it gets targetted with virus more often than others. However, if you update it, and have fair amount of anti-virus and firewalls, you should be safe. The question remains, if you have time to do all that? I surely dont. I cant be asked to keep updating my system just because microsoft failed to spot the hole in the first place..

As for software, I have to admit, theres much much more software available for microsoft than other distros, BUT THE QUESTION IS, do you use that software? I dont...

If you are using some software which is only working in windows xp, then you better stick to xp and tweak it to work as you would like it to work.

As for the Average Joe like myself, all I do is surf the internet, watch clips on youtube.com, publish a few articles on my website SiteLancers.NET

so I use freebsd with kde on the top. my wireless connection works, I can make a CV in openoffice.org and also play youtube.com. My java also works, and I dont get viruses. I ALSO use pidgin.im for my msn contacts. So FREEBSD IS enough for me.

However, I have been thinking about playing games on my PC, since I dont wanna spend money on buying an xbox, and dont have space to keep a tv for an xbox or wii, so games arent that good on linux and freebsd. Theres emulators like wine out there, but as mentioned before, I just dont have the time. Id rather install and play. So if you wanna play games, stick with windows.

another advantage of linux is that, when installing, everything gets installed in one shot, compared to windows, where you have to keep installing vga drivers, sound and ethernet drivers.... thats annoying. So windows should really change that bit.

The only bad thing about windows is VIRUSES........ I HATE THEM.

The bad thing about linux / freebsd is GAMES AND SOFTWARE support. However, saying that, theres plenty of games online now, I constantly play power soccer, which i found much better than fifa 09. You can play power soccer online at mygames.co.uk.

Theres also small issues such as flash support in Freebsd and linux, however, I think in next 3 years, that should be sorted. flash plugin 7 works ok on youtube.com.

Just an average Joe.
